For years, many have recognized Rock Point as a basketball powerhouse, but the school’s athletic programs continue to grow and make strides in other sports. This year, the Rock Point Middle School Lady Cougars added another accomplishment to that legacy by winning the NAIC Division II Girls Softball Championship.

The championship season was guided by community member and head coach Twila Charlie, whose leadership helped shape a hardworking and resilient team. Like many small schools, Rock Point often faces challenges in finding coaches for its athletic programs, making the team’s success even more meaningful.

Coach Charlie shared that one of the biggest challenges the team faced this season was learning how to handle the emotional highs and lows that come with competition.

“One day you’ll have great games where you hit the ball, steal bases, make catches, and get outs,” she explained. “On the other hand, there are games where mistakes happen, players miss the ball, overthrow teammates, or begin to doubt themselves.”

Despite those moments, the Lady Cougars refused to give up. Through determination, hard work, and trust in one another, the team kept their heads high and continued to improve throughout the season.

Coach Charlie said what made her most proud was seeing the players take ownership of their growth and commitment to the team. Whether it meant asking for extra practice time or encouraging one another on and off the field, the players showed dedication and maturity throughout the year.

“As a coach, seeing your team wanting to improve is truly something special,” she shared. “Watching them grow together, cheer each other on, have fun, and stay humble no matter the outcome made this season rewarding.”

Her coaching philosophy centered on helping the players enjoy the game while building confidence in themselves and their abilities. Coach Charlie encouraged the girls to develop their own style of play and reminded them that mistakes are part of learning the game.

“I always told the girls that if they made a mistake, take a deep breath, shake it off, and get the next one,” she said. “I can help them improve, but they have to want it more than me as a coach.”

The Lady Cougars’ championship season reflects not only their athletic talent, but also their perseverance, teamwork, communication, and sportsmanship. Their success is another example of how Rock Point athletics continues to grow across multiple sports, including volleyball, football, and now softball. This is Rock Point. We are Rock Point!

Congratulations to the Rock Point Middle School Lady Cougars and Coach Twila Charlie on an outstanding championship season.
