RPCS Hosts First in Series of Native Authors Nights
October 21, 2025 – Rock Point, Arizona

“Fall in line, Holden!” echoed through the crowd as students, families, and staff joined Navajo author Daniel Vandever during his lively reading at Rock Point Community School. Vandever was the first featured guest in a new series of Native Authors Nights, designed to bring students and their families together through the power of reading and storytelling.

During the event, Vandever was also presented with a book written by RPCS students, to which he offered thoughtful suggestions for editing and improvement. His feedback inspired many young writers to view revision as an essential and creative part of the writing process.

One of the school’s improvement goals focuses on increasing language arts achievement among students. By engaging families in reading and writing activities with their children, RPCS hopes to help establish family literacy practices that positively impact student success in language arts.

To make this effort meaningful and culturally relevant, the series highlights Native authors whose stories reflect the language, culture, and experiences of the students themselves. When students see their identities and communities represented in the literature they read, they become more engaged learners—building both skills and confidence.

At least four generations were represented at the first Native Authors Night, reflecting the strong community support for literacy and cultural pride. RPCS invites everyone to join us for upcoming Native Authors Nights as we continue celebrating stories that inspire and connect us all.

🍂 Fall Festival + Red Ribbon Week Kickoff! 🎗️
Tomorrow, we invite families to join us for our Fall Festival and the start of Red Ribbon Week! 🌟

Kick off the evening with Mr. Alfonso Nez Jr. and his special presentation “Sparing the Life of Monsters” — a powerful exploration of Navajo culture and tradition. In Navajo teachings, “monsters” symbolize struggles like hunger for drugs or alcohol, and through stories and community, we learn how to overcome them. 💛

Afterwards, enjoy family-friendly games, pumpkin carving, music, and treats! 🎃🎵
